Reflection
A title framed around confronting a well-known pastor suggests a conversation willing to press into disagreement rather than settle for pleasantries. Judah Smith has built a substantial ministry and public profile, and any figure of that scale attracts both admiration and hard questions about influence, theology, and accountability. Scripture does not shy away from this kind of scrutiny; Paul commends the Bereans for examining even an apostle's teaching against Scripture rather than accepting it uncritically. Genuine respect and honest challenge are not opposites, and a culture that treats leaders as beyond question tends to serve no one well, least of all the leaders themselves. What matters in any such exchange is whether the confrontation aims at truth and accountability or simply at conflict for its own sake. Watching two public figures navigate disagreement with any grace at all is, in itself, a rare and instructive thing.
Questions to sit with
- How do you personally handle disagreement with someone you otherwise respect?
- What does it look like to examine a leader's teaching the way the Bereans examined Paul's?
- Where is the line between honest challenge and public conflict for its own sake?
