    Reflection

Stories of survival from exploitative and abusive industries carry weight that deserves careful, respectful attention rather than sensational retelling. Scripture takes seriously both the reality of victimisation and the possibility of restoration; the woman caught in adultery, publicly shamed and threatened, was met by Jesus not with condemnation but with dignity and a fresh start, 'go now and leave your life of sin' (John 8:11). Survivors of abuse and exploitation often carry trauma that no single conversation or conversion moment fully resolves, and Christians hearing such testimonies should resist the temptation to wrap them too neatly. What such stories can offer, honestly told, is a picture of God's particular tenderness towards the vulnerable and mistreated, a theme running through scripture from the prophets' concern for the oppressed to Christ's consistent compassion for those society had discarded. Healing, in these accounts, tends to be a long process rather than a single moment, and that reality deserves respect.

    Questions to sit with

    • How can we honour survivors' stories without flattening their complexity into a simple narrative?
    • What does Jesus's response to the woman caught in adultery reveal about how he treats the vulnerable?
    • Why might healing from exploitation and abuse be better understood as a long process than a single event?
