    Reflection

Few names carry as much weight, curiosity, and disagreement as the name of Jesus. Across two thousand years he has been called teacher, prophet, revolutionary, and Son of God, and people continue to form strong opinions about him even when they know relatively little about the historical record. The Gospels present him as someone who taught with unusual authority, kept unlikely company, and made claims about himself that his contemporaries found either compelling or scandalous. At the heart of Christian belief is the conviction that Jesus was not simply a good moral teacher but God become human, entering fully into the ordinary texture of life while remaining without sin. C.S. Lewis famously argued that this leaves little room for a middle position: someone who said the things Jesus said must be either exactly who he claimed to be, or something far less flattering. Whatever conclusion a person reaches, Jesus remains a figure it is difficult to be neutral about, and that has been true since the very first disciples asked, who is this man?
