Stories of prominent scientists moving from atheism to Christian faith often provoke strong reactions, partly because science and faith are so frequently presented as opposites locked in permanent conflict. In reality, many scientists throughout history and today have found no contradiction between rigorous inquiry and belief in a creator, seeing the two as complementary rather than competing. Such conversions are usually not sudden but the result of years wrestling with questions science alone could not settle, questions about meaning, consciousness, morality and the origin of the universe itself. The Bible has never asked believers to switch off their minds. Paul argues that God's nature has been visible through creation since the world began, so that people are without excuse (Romans 1:20). A scientist changing their mind about God is not a betrayal of reason, it can be reason honestly followed to conclusions the evidence itself suggested all along.
