    Reflection

Who are you really is a deceptively simple question, and most people spend a lifetime circling it without quite landing on an answer. We often build identity from achievement, appearance, relationships or other people's opinions, all of which shift constantly and none of which can bear the full weight we put on them. Christianity offers a different starting point, that identity begins with being known and loved by God before it is earned by anything a person does. The Psalmist marvels that God formed him in the womb and knew him intimately before he had done anything at all (Psalm 139:13-16). Paul writes of being a new creation in Christ, with the old definitions of self genuinely passing away (2 Corinthians 5:17). Asking who you really are, in that light, is not a search you conduct alone, it is an invitation to discover who you already are in the eyes of God.

    Questions to sit with

    • What do you currently rely on most to answer the question of who you are?
    • How would your sense of identity change if you believed you were already fully known?
    • What would you need to let go of to receive your identity as a gift rather than earn it?
