    Reflection

The claim that science has disproved God has become almost a cultural reflex, repeated so often that many assume it must be settled fact. Yet a number of serious thinkers, including mathematicians and philosophers of science, argue the opposite, that the deeper science probes into the order, fine tuning and origins of the universe, the harder naturalism finds it to explain everything without appeal to something beyond itself. This is not a claim that science proves God in a laboratory sense, faith is not that kind of knowledge. It is the more modest observation that a universe governed by comprehensible laws, capable of producing conscious minds able to study those very laws, fits more naturally with the idea of a purposeful creator than with pure accident. The Psalms put it simply: the heavens declare the glory of God (Psalm 19:1). Careful thinking about science need not bury faith, for many it has done the opposite.

    • What about the natural world strikes you as more than mere accident?
    • Whose confident claims about faith or science have you accepted without checking them yourself?
