    Reflection

Matthew 7's short teaching on asking, seeking, and knocking is often treated as a simple promise about prayer, yet its context within the Sermon on the Mount gives it a sharper edge, following Jesus's warnings against judging others and preceding his call to enter through the narrow gate. Jesus grounds the promise in God's character as a good Father: 'If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him' (Matthew 7:11). The comparison matters; the confidence to keep asking rests not on technique but on trust in who God is. Persistence in prayer, asking, seeking, knocking, described in continuous verb forms in the original text, suggests an ongoing posture rather than a single request. That steady, patient asking, rooted in confidence about God's goodness, offers a different model of prayer than either presumption or despair.

    Questions to sit with

    • What does persistent, ongoing prayer look like in your own life?
    • How does trusting God's character as a good Father shape how you pray?
    • Where have you experienced the gap between asking and receiving, and how did you hold on to trust during it?
