    Reflection

Matthew 18's teaching on confronting a fellow believer directly, rather than gossiping or ignoring the offence, remains one of the most practically demanding passages in the Gospels. Jesus's instruction is precise: 'If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you' (Matthew 18:15), a private first step that many find harder than either silence or public complaint. The goal named explicitly is restoration, 'you have won them over,' not victory or vindication, which reframes confrontation as an act of love rather than an assertion of being right. This passage resists the modern instinct to either avoid conflict entirely or air grievances publicly, offering instead a slower, more relational path that requires courage and humility from everyone involved. Righteous confrontation, done well, protects relationships rather than damaging them further, though it demands more patience than most alternatives.

    Questions to sit with

    • Why is direct, private confrontation often harder than either silence or public complaint?
    • What does it mean for confrontation to aim at restoration rather than being right?
    • When have you found courage to address a conflict directly rather than avoiding it?
