Reflection
Matthew 24's warning to 'stay awake' addresses a persistent human tendency to drift into complacency, assuming that ordinary time will simply continue as it always has. Jesus's words are urgent without being anxious: 'Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come' (Matthew 24:42). That call to alertness is less about predicting a date, something Jesus explicitly says even he, in his human knowledge, did not know, and more about living each day with a settled readiness that shapes ordinary choices. End-times teaching can easily tip into speculation about timelines and current events, which scripture itself discourages, or it can serve its actual purpose, sharpening how believers live now. Reading this passage well means resisting both apathy and anxious speculation, choosing instead the steady faithfulness Jesus commends throughout the parables that follow, about servants entrusted with responsibility while they wait.
Questions to sit with
- What does staying spiritually 'awake' look like in your everyday life, rather than in speculation about dates?
- How do you hold urgency about the future together with faithfulness in ordinary responsibilities today?
- Where have you noticed complacency creeping into your own spiritual life?
