    Reflection

Walking into some of the darkest corners of a culture to speak of hope takes a particular kind of courage, especially for someone doing it as part of a younger generation often assumed to be indifferent to faith. Jesus himself was known for going to places others avoided, eating with tax collectors and sinners, and drawing criticism for it (Mark 2:16-17). His reply was simple: it is the sick who need a doctor, not the healthy. Evangelism among people living with addiction, exploitation or despair is rarely comfortable, and it asks more of the messenger than clever words; it asks presence, patience and genuine care. Younger Christians stepping into such spaces often do so having wrestled with their own doubts and struggles, which can make their witness less about answers and more about companionship. Real transformation, scripture suggests, tends to happen slowly and relationally rather than through a single dramatic encounter, which is worth remembering whenever such stories are told.

    Questions to sit with

    • What do you think equips someone to minister well in genuinely difficult or dark environments?
    • How does Jesus's example of eating with outcasts challenge assumptions about who faith is for?
    • What might it look like to show care for someone without expecting immediate change?
