    Reflection

Exploring faith alongside contemporary perspectives is a genuinely useful exercise, since Christianity has always had to articulate itself within, and sometimes against, the assumptions of its own era, from the Roman world of the early church to the digital culture of today. The challenge is doing so without losing what is distinctive; adapting the language of faith to reach a modern audience is different from adapting the content of faith to please one. Paul's approach in Athens is instructive: he engaged the philosophical culture of his day directly, quoting its poets, while still proclaiming something genuinely new, 'the God who made the world and everything in it' (Acts 17:24). That balance, cultural fluency paired with theological clarity, remains the task facing anyone who wants Christian faith to be heard, rather than merely tolerated, in contemporary conversation. It is demanding work, and rarely finished.

    Questions to sit with

    • How do you distinguish between adapting how faith is expressed and changing what it actually claims?
    • What can Paul's approach in Athens teach about engaging a sceptical culture?
    • Where have you seen faith communicated well to a contemporary audience?
