    Reflection

Interviews framed as revealing what 'they' did not want seen can carry a whiff of sensationalism, and it is worth approaching such framing with a measure of scepticism regardless of who is speaking. Chris Langan's reputation rests on claims about intelligence and unconventional ideas about the nature of reality, and Christians engaging with such thinking should test it, as with any philosophy, against what can actually be known and against the character of Christ rather than against how provocative it sounds. Paul's caution remains relevant: 'See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy' (Colossians 2:8), a warning aimed not at thinking itself but at ideas that sound impressive while leading away from truth. Intellectual curiosity is a good thing, and Christians need not fear hard questions about consciousness or the universe's structure, but curiosity should be paired with discernment about which frameworks actually cohere with what is true, good, and consistent with a reasoned faith.

    Questions to sit with

    • How do you evaluate an unconventional idea without being swept along simply because it sounds impressive?
    • What does it mean practically to test philosophy against the character of Christ?
    • Where is the line between healthy intellectual curiosity and being led astray?
