How to Write a Christian Testimony

A Christian testimony is simply the honest story of how Jesus has met you. It does not need to be dramatic, polished, or theological, it needs to be true. This guide walks through how to write one in a way that is clear, faithful and useful to whoever reads or hears it.

1. Start with the simple structure: before, meeting, after

Almost every strong Christian testimony follows the same three movements. Before, what your life, mindset or struggles looked like before you knew Christ. Meeting, the moment, season or sequence of events through which you encountered Jesus. After, what has actually changed: in your priorities, your relationships, your hope, your character.

If you cannot point to a single dramatic moment, that is fine. Many people grow into faith slowly. Describe the steady realisation rather than inventing fireworks.

2. Write the way you actually speak

A testimony is a story, not a sermon. Use ordinary language. Short sentences. Real details, a kitchen table, a hospital ward, a song that wouldn't leave you. Specifics make a story believable. Jargon like "I got saved", "the enemy was attacking" or "I felt convicted" can wash over people who did not grow up in church. Translate where you can.

3. Keep Christ at the centre

It is easy to write a testimony that is mainly about you, your problems, your turnaround, your effort. A Christian testimony is different. It is the story of what Jesus has done. Your role is honest reporter, not hero. Ask, as you draft: would someone reading this walk away thinking more highly of Christ, or more highly of me?

4. Be honest about the past, wise about the details

Grace is only visible against the truth. Don't sanitise your story so much that the change becomes invisible. At the same time, don't broadcast every detail. Two questions help: does this detail show the depth of grace, and does sharing it harm anyone else? If the answer to the first is no, leave it out. If the answer to the second is yes, leave it out.

5. Choose one anchor scripture

Pick a single Bible verse that names what God has done for you. It might be Ephesians 2:8–9, Psalm 40:1–3, Romans 8:1, John 8:12 or 2 Corinthians 5:17. One verse, well placed, gives the story weight. A wall of references makes it feel like a lecture.

6. Land the ending

Don't trail off. End with what Jesus is doing in your life now, the scripture you chose, and a quiet invitation, not a sales pitch, for the listener to consider Christ for themselves. Something as simple as, "If any of this resonates, the same Jesus is available to you," is enough.

7. Edit ruthlessly, then read it aloud

First drafts are almost always too long. Cut anything that doesn't serve the before → meeting Jesus → after journey of your story.

Once you've finished, read it aloud. If you stumble over a sentence, chances are your listener will too. Aim for around three to five minutes when spoken, or 800–1,500 words when written.

That said, this is your testimony. These are guidelines, not rules. I've broken them myself and written much longer stories. Don't let this guide restrict what you feel God is leading you to share. The most important thing is that your story is authentic and points people to Him.
