    Reflection

The sense that the world is against the name of Jesus reflects an old and recurring pattern rather than a new development. From the earliest centuries, the name of Christ has provoked reactions ranging from devotion to hostility, rarely indifference. This is itself telling, since few historical figures generate such strong and lasting responses two thousand years on. The apostle Paul wrote that at the name of Jesus every knee will one day bow (Philippians 2:10), language that speaks of ultimate vindication even amid present opposition. Believers throughout history have found comfort not in the absence of opposition but in the assurance that it does not have the final word. Jesus himself told his followers plainly that they would face hatred for his sake, yet also promised his continual presence with them regardless (Matthew 28:20). Facing cultural resistance to Christian faith, whether subtle dismissal or open hostility, can be discouraging, but it also connects believers today to a very long line of others who held firm under far greater pressure and found their faith sustained rather than destroyed.

    Questions to sit with

    • How do you personally experience opposition to your faith, subtle or otherwise?
    • What helps you stay grounded when your beliefs are dismissed by others?
    • Does knowing Christians throughout history faced far greater hostility change how you view your own experience?
