War on our children

Reflection
Concern about a war on children reflects genuine anxieties many parents and believers hold about the pressures facing young people today, from harmful online content and early sexualisation to declining mental health and confusion about identity. These are not imagined problems, and Scripture takes childhood and the protection of the vulnerable extremely seriously. Jesus welcomed children directly, warning that anyone who caused a little one to stumble would face severe consequences, and adding that it would be better for such a person to have a millstone tied around their neck and be thrown into the sea (Matthew 18:6). This is unusually strong language for Jesus, indicating how seriously he regarded the protection of children from harm. While it is important to name genuine threats honestly, it is equally important to avoid language so alarmist that it produces fear rather than constructive action. Christian responses have historically focused on practical protection, moral formation and prayerful vigilance, equipping children with resilient faith and wise discernment rather than merely reacting anxiously to cultural pressures beyond any individual family's full control.
Questions to sit with
- What specific pressures do you see facing children and young people today?
- How can you practically help protect and disciple the children in your own life or community?
- Do you respond to these concerns with constructive action, fear, or a mixture of both?
