    Reflection

Claims that mainstream culture has become demonic are strong and provocative, often pointing towards moral confusion, spiritual emptiness or troubling trends observed in media, entertainment and public life. Christians have long used spiritual language to describe cultural decline, though such language deserves careful, discerning use rather than casual application to anything simply disliked or unfamiliar. Paul reminds believers that their struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12), a reminder that cultural problems often have a deeper dimension than politics or taste alone. At the same time, Scripture calls Christians to discernment rather than fear, testing everything and holding fast to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Labelling entire cultural trends as demonic without careful thought can slide into fear-driven judgement rather than sober assessment. A more helpful posture combines honest awareness of genuine spiritual darkness with humility, prayer and engagement, resisting cultural pressures that oppose Christian values while still loving those caught up in them, rather than retreating into suspicion of culture as a whole.

    Questions to sit with

    • How do you personally discern between genuine spiritual darkness and things you simply find unfamiliar or uncomfortable?
    • Does concern about cultural decline lead you towards fear, prayerful engagement, or withdrawal?
    • What would loving engagement with a troubled culture look like for you practically?
