Jesus Divides

Reflection
It can be surprising to encounter Jesus's own words that he came not to bring peace on earth but division, setting even family members against one another (Matthew 10:34-36). This sits uneasily with more familiar images of Jesus as purely gentle and unifying, yet it reflects an honest reality: genuine, wholehearted allegiance to Christ inevitably creates friction with those unwilling to share it. This is not division for its own sake, nor does it contradict Jesus's teaching elsewhere about peace and reconciliation. Rather, it acknowledges that following Jesus fully sometimes places a person at odds with family expectations, cultural norms or personal ambitions that conflict with the demands of discipleship. Choosing Christ above all else, as Jesus explicitly requires, will inevitably create tension wherever ultimate loyalty is contested. This division is the cost some believers experience directly, whether through strained family relationships or social alienation, and Jesus does not minimise this cost but names it plainly, while also promising that whatever is given up for his sake is not given up in vain.
Questions to sit with
- Has following Jesus ever created tension or division in your own relationships?
- How do you hold together Christ's promise of peace with his warning about division?
- What would it cost you personally to place loyalty to Christ above other competing loyalties?
