Reflection
Christianity in Ethiopia has one of the longest continuous histories of any nation in the world, tracing back to the fourth century when it became one of the earliest kingdoms to adopt Christianity as a state religion, and even earlier through the account in Acts of an Ethiopian official's conversion and baptism after an encounter with the apostle Philip (Acts 8:26-39). The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has preserved distinctive traditions, liturgy, and biblical manuscripts across many centuries, largely independent of Western Christianity's later developments. This long and rich history challenges a common but mistaken assumption that Christianity is primarily a Western religion exported elsewhere. In truth, some of its oldest continuous expressions are found in Africa and the Middle East, regions where the faith took deep root long before it became widespread in Europe. Recognising this fuller and more global picture of Christian history can be a helpful corrective, enriching our understanding of how varied and ancient the church's story actually is.
