Does suffering prove there is no god

    Reflection

The problem of suffering is arguably the strongest and most emotionally serious objection to belief in a good, powerful God, and it should never be answered glibly, especially with someone in the midst of real pain. Philosophers have long noted the tension between an all-good, all-powerful God and the sheer scale of suffering in the world, and thoughtful Christians take that tension seriously rather than dismissing it. The book of Job offers no tidy explanation for suffering, instead presenting a God who meets Job in his questions without fully answering them (Job 38-42). Christianity's most distinctive response to suffering is not a philosophical argument at all but the cross, the claim that God himself entered human suffering rather than remaining distant from it (Isaiah 53:3-5). That does not make suffering easy to bear, but it does mean the question is not evidence Christians avoid, it is one they have wrestled with from the very centre of their faith.

    • Do you find comfort, or further difficulty, in the idea that God entered human suffering?
    • Who has walked with you honestly through a season of real pain, without offering easy answers?
