Reflection
The claim that science explains everything is a common cultural assumption rather than a conclusion science itself actually demonstrates, and it is a distinction John Lennox has spent much of his career carefully drawing out for wider audiences. Science is remarkably good at answering how questions, mechanisms and processes, but considerably more limited when it comes to why questions, meaning and purpose, a distinction easily lost in popular scientific communication. The Psalms declare that the heavens proclaim God's glory, a claim about meaning layered onto observable creation rather than a competing scientific hypothesis about mechanism. Recognising the proper scope and genuine limits of any single discipline, whether science, theology, or philosophy, tends to produce more honest and less overreaching conclusions across the board. Insight of this kind is less about defending faith against science and more about being precise regarding what each discipline can and cannot actually tell us.
Questions to sit with
- Where do you see the distinction between how questions and why questions playing out in your own thinking?
- What are the genuine limits of scientific explanation, in your view?
- How do meaning and mechanism relate to each other when you consider the natural world?
