    Reflection

Framing belief in God as a stark choice between fact and fiction can oversimplify a question that most serious thinkers, on either side, recognise as more layered than a binary. John Lennox's university talks, often delivered to sceptical student audiences, tend to work carefully through cosmology, ethics, and the limits of scientific explanation rather than offering a single knockdown proof. Paul told the Athenians at the Areopagus that God is not far from any of us, appealing to both reason and to the deep human intuition that there is more to reality than the merely material. That approach, meeting people in a public forum with both intellectual rigour and evident respect, models something valuable regardless of the specific arguments used. A university audience, often assumed to be uniformly sceptical, frequently contains far more genuine searching than public stereotype suggests.

    Questions to sit with

    • Do you find the fact-or-fiction framing of belief in God helpful, or does it oversimplify things?
    • What did Paul's approach at the Areopagus model about engaging a sceptical audience?
    • How much genuine spiritual searching do you think exists beneath surface-level scepticism?
