Reflection
The question of evil sits at the centre of honest faith rather than at its margins, and no serious Christian thinker treats it lightly. Frank Turek's title states the problem in its classic form: if a good and powerful God exists, why does suffering persist? Various responses have been offered over centuries, concerning freedom, formation, and mystery, and none removes the weight of real pain entirely. Scripture does not pretend otherwise; even Jesus wept at a friend's grave before raising him (John 11:35), showing that grief and hope are not mutually exclusive within the Christian account of suffering. What the Bible offers is not a tidy formula but a God who enters suffering rather than remaining distant from it, culminating in the cross itself. Anyone asking this question honestly deserves more than a quick answer; they deserve the acknowledgement that the question is serious, and that Christian hope has always had to be forged, not simply assumed, in the presence of real evil.
Questions to sit with
- What has been your own hardest experience with the question of why God allows suffering?
- Do you find comfort, challenge, or both in the idea of a God who enters suffering rather than explaining it away?
- How do grief and hope coexist in your own life?
