    Reflection

Historical arguments for the resurrection occupy a genuinely distinctive place in Christian apologetics, since they rest on ordinary historical method, evaluating sources, dating, and corroboration, rather than purely philosophical or scientific argument. Wesley Huff's academic training in New Testament manuscripts and textual criticism equips him to engage this territory with the kind of rigour that resists easy dismissal from either overconfident believers or overconfident sceptics. Paul himself grounds the entire Christian claim in historical event rather than abstract philosophy, listing specific witnesses to the resurrection in his letter to the Corinthians as evidence open to inquiry rather than private conviction. Whether or not any listener finds a particular argument fully persuasive, taking the historical question seriously, rather than assuming it has been settled definitively in either direction, remains valuable in itself. Faith and careful history need not be enemies, even where reasonable scholars continue to disagree about conclusions.

    Questions to sit with

    • How much weight should historical evidence carry in your own approach to Christian belief?
    • What makes the resurrection claim different from other kinds of religious claims philosophically?
    • How do you engage with scholars who reach different conclusions on the same historical evidence?
