Reflection
A story about rescuing trafficked children forces a question most of us would rather avoid: what would we actually do if we saw a child in danger and helping cost us something real? Scripture is unambiguous about this kind of vulnerability. Jesus said that whoever welcomes a little child in his name welcomes him, and the prophets repeatedly link true religion to defending the fatherless and the oppressed. It is easy to feel compassion from a safe distance; it is harder to let that compassion become action, risk or sacrifice. Stories like this matter not because they flatter our sense of outrage, but because they remind us that evil thrives where good people look away. Faith that does not eventually move the hands and feet is, as James put it, a faith that is dead. Watching accounts of costly courage can either stay a comfortable emotion or become a genuine examination of what our own compassion is worth in practice.
Questions to sit with
- What is one concrete way you could support vulnerable children in your own community?
- How do you usually respond when compassion for someone in danger would cost you something?
- What does James mean when he says faith without works is dead, and how does that challenge you personally?
