Reflection
A wave of young people in 1970s Southern California searching for truth through freedom, protest and experimentation eventually collided with a very old story about repentance and belonging. It is a familiar pattern across generations: a search for meaning that begins in rebellion against inherited structures often ends up circling back to the same ancient questions those structures were trying to answer. The book of Ecclesiastes captures something of that restlessness, a generation trying everything under the sun before discovering that lasting meaning was never going to come from novelty alone. Spiritual awakenings among the young have a way of unsettling institutions that expected renewal to look respectable and controlled. What endures from such moments is rarely the culture around them but the transformed lives left behind. It is worth asking what our own generation's search for freedom is actually longing for, and whether it has already been answered somewhere we have stopped looking.
