    Upside down world

    Reflection

The phrase upside down world captures something many people sense intuitively, that the values society rewards, such as status, self-promotion, and winning at others' expense, often sit at odds with what genuinely brings peace or lasting good. Jesus taught a set of values that were strikingly inverted compared with the norms of his own time and, arguably, of ours. In the Beatitudes he declared blessing on the poor in spirit, the meek, and those who mourn, rather than the powerful or the successful (Matthew 5:3-10). This reversal was not simply a clever rhetorical device but a serious claim about what actually matters in the end. The last shall be first, Jesus said elsewhere, and the greatest among you will be a servant. Living by these values in a culture built on the opposite priorities can feel disorienting, even foolish. Yet Christians have long held that this apparent upside down way of living is, in fact, the world the right way up, and that our usual priorities are the ones that have things backwards.

    • Which of society's usual priorities do you find yourself chasing without questioning?
    • Have you ever experienced genuine peace by choosing a less conventional path?
    • What would serving others rather than seeking status look like in your own week?
