Reflection
Historical proof is a phrase that gets used loosely in conversations about faith, often meaning either courtroom style certainty or, at the other extreme, no evidence worth considering at all. The reality sits between those two poles. Ancient history in general, including events widely accepted by secular historians, rarely comes with the kind of proof available for events with modern documentation, yet historians still reach confident conclusions based on the quality and quantity of surviving sources. By that standard, the New Testament documents compare favourably with other ancient texts historians treat as reliable, supported by early manuscripts, multiple independent sources, and details corroborated by archaeology and non Christian writers of the period. This does not settle theological questions about the resurrection or the identity of Christ, which require more than historical method alone to fully assess, but it does mean dismissing the New Testament as historically worthless simply does not match how careful historians actually treat the evidence.
Questions to sit with
- What standard of historical evidence do you think is reasonable for ancient events?
- Have you compared how historians treat the New Testament with how they treat other ancient texts?
- Where do you draw the line between historical evidence and matters requiring personal faith?
