There is a very real darkness in the world we can't all ignore

Reflection
Acknowledging real darkness in the world, whether through violence, cruelty, injustice, or suffering, is not pessimism but honesty. Christianity has never taught that evil is an illusion or a minor inconvenience to be ignored. The Bible takes the reality of sin and darkness with complete seriousness, describing a world genuinely marred by wrongdoing and describing spiritual forces of evil at work behind much human cruelty (Ephesians 6:12). What makes the Christian account distinctive is that acknowledging darkness is never the final word. Alongside the seriousness of evil sits an equally serious hope, that light has entered the world and that darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5). This is not a naive optimism that pretends things are fine, but a conviction that darkness, however real, does not have ultimate authority. Holding both truths together, honest about how bad things can be while still hopeful about where the story ultimately leads, is one of the more demanding but important postures Christian faith asks of its followers.
