Reflection
Atonement sits at the very centre of Christian theology, describing how the death of Jesus is understood to deal with human sin and restore a broken relationship with God. Various explanations have developed across church history to describe how this works, from the idea of a substitute bearing punishment in our place, to the picture of ransom and rescue, to the notion of moral example and victory over evil. These are not necessarily in competition, and many theologians hold several together as complementary ways of describing something ultimately mysterious. Paul wrote that God presented Jesus as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in his blood, demonstrating his justice while also justifying those who have faith (Romans 3:25-26). Whatever theory a person finds most persuasive, the underlying claim is consistent: that something decisive happened at the cross which addresses the real problem of human wrongdoing, and that this was costly to God rather than something achieved cheaply or without genuine sacrifice.

- How do you personally understand the connection between sin, guilt, and forgiveness?
- Does the idea of atonement feel meaningful to you, or distant and abstract?
