The animal that carried Jesus

Reflection
The animal traditionally associated with carrying Jesus is the donkey, most famously during his entry into Jerusalem before his crucifixion, an event now commemorated as Palm Sunday. The Gospels describe Jesus specifically requesting a young donkey for this purpose, fulfilling an image found in the prophet Zechariah of a king coming, righteous and victorious, yet humble and riding on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9). The choice of animal was deliberate and symbolically loaded. Kings riding to war traditionally rode horses, while a donkey signalled peace and humility rather than conquest. This small detail captures something central to how Jesus understood his own mission, entering the city not as a conquering military figure but as a humble king, even as crowds around him shouted messianic acclaim. It is a reminder that the manner of Jesus's arrival, quiet, unassuming, and deliberately unspectacular by worldly standards, said as much about his kingdom as any of his teaching did.
Questions to sit with
- What do you make of a king choosing humility over strength as his defining image?
- Where in your own life could you choose a quieter, humbler approach over a more forceful one?
- Does the detail of the donkey change how you picture that moment in the Gospels?
