Jesus never offered happiness

Reflection
The claim that Jesus never offered happiness sounds startling at first, since so much popular Christianity today is framed around personal wellbeing and blessing. Yet a careful reading of the Gospels shows Jesus speaking far more often about the cost of discipleship, the necessity of taking up a cross, and the blessedness of those who mourn, are persecuted or hunger for righteousness, than about happiness as commonly understood. What Jesus does offer is something the Gospels call blessedness or joy, a deeper and more durable reality than fleeting happiness dependent on favourable circumstances. He spoke of his joy remaining in his followers so that their joy might be complete, even while warning them plainly that in this world they would have trouble. That distinction matters because a faith that promises only happiness tends to collapse when hardship arrives, while a faith rooted in something steadier can hold firm precisely when circumstances are difficult.
