    Reflection

There is something in the sheer intricacy of a butterfly, the transformation from crawling caterpillar to a winged creature capable of astonishing colour and flight, that seems to invite the word design even from people who would not normally reach for religious language. Whether such intricacy is best explained by unguided processes over vast stretches of time or by purposeful creation remains a genuine debate, and thoughtful Christians hold different views on how to read it. What is less contested is the emotional and spiritual pull such beauty exerts on almost everyone who pays close attention to it. The Psalmist responds to creation not with technical argument but with worship, declaring that the works of God's hands are manifold and made in wisdom (Psalm 104:24). A butterfly need not settle a scientific argument to still function as a small, ordinary reminder that the world was not obviously destined to be beautiful, and yet it is.

    Questions to sit with

    • When was the last time something in nature genuinely stopped you in your tracks?
    • Do you tend to notice beauty in the ordinary, or only in the spectacular?
    • How does wonder at creation shape, or fail to shape, your sense of God?
