    Reflection

Slavery, the treatment of women, and the unforgivable sin are three of the most frequently raised objections to the Bible, and a direct conversation between Christian debaters and an atheist interlocutor on all three at once suggests a wide-ranging and demanding exchange. These are not questions to be answered glibly; they require careful attention to historical context, the arc of the biblical narrative, and honest acknowledgment of passages that remain genuinely difficult. Jesus himself identified blasphemy against the Spirit as the one unforgivable sin, a passage that has troubled readers for centuries and deserves careful, humble interpretation rather than a quick soundbite. Good faith engagement with hard objections, rather than defensive dismissal, tends to be far more persuasive to a watching audience than certainty that refuses to grapple with difficulty. Wrestling honestly with Scripture's hardest passages is not a threat to faith but often the very path toward a more mature one.

    Questions to sit with

    • Which biblical passage do you personally find hardest to reconcile with your understanding of God?
    • How should historical context shape the way we read difficult passages about slavery or the treatment of women?
    • What do you make of the idea of an unforgivable sin, and how do you interpret it?
