Reflection
Conversations between public figures with differing histories and convictions can be some of the most revealing moments on any platform, precisely because neither party fully knows what the other will say. Genuine dialogue, especially across political or spiritual divides, requires a willingness to listen rather than merely wait for a turn to speak, something scripture commends when it says to be 'quick to listen, slow to speak' (James 1:19). Faith journeys, particularly those involving public reinvention, often unfold messily and in full view, which can make them easy to judge from a distance. Christians watching such exchanges do well to resist reducing another person's spiritual search to a headline, since real transformation, as scripture consistently shows, tends to be gradual and layered. Whatever specific views are exchanged, the value of such conversations often lies less in who 'wins' an argument and more in the humanising effect of two people genuinely engaging one another's convictions.
Questions to sit with
- What helps two people with very different views have a genuinely respectful conversation?
- How might James's counsel to be slow to speak change the way we approach disagreement?
- Why can it be tempting, and unfair, to judge someone's spiritual journey from a single conversation?
