Reflection
There is something instructive in pairing an image as simple as water with the idea of childlike faith, since Jesus himself pointed to children as the model for entering the kingdom of heaven, not because they are naive but because they receive without pretending to have already earned anything. Water carries obvious associations across scripture, from baptism to the living water Jesus offers the woman at the well, imagery of cleansing, thirst and renewal that does not require complicated theology to be understood. Childlike faith is frequently misread as simplistic, when it may actually be the harder achievement for adults who have learned to protect themselves with scepticism and self-sufficiency. Coming to God the way a child comes to a trusted parent, without agenda or defence, asks for a kind of vulnerability that most of us spend years building walls against. Music that returns listeners to that simplicity is doing something quietly countercultural.
Questions to sit with
- What makes childlike faith difficult to recover once we have grown more guarded or self-sufficient?
- How does the image of water speak to your own sense of spiritual thirst or renewal?
- What would it look like practically for you to approach God without agenda or defence?
