    What this song is about

Unspoken's Chad Mattson has said "Reason" came out of the hardest season of his adult life, as his wife battled anxiety and depression and his family faced trauma together. He has shared that the first verse is really his own testimony from that time, and that the song, like the rest of the album, was written to remind himself and his family of truths they needed to hear, closing with a reference to Philippians 1:6.

    Reflection

Searching for reason, whether in suffering, delay or unanswered prayer, is one of the most common and least resolved struggles of faith. Isaiah 55:8 reminds believers that God's thoughts are not our thoughts, a verse that does not explain suffering away but reframes the expectation that everything should make immediate sense. A song simply titled Reason suggests this search, the human need to understand why things happen as they do. Faith does not require abandoning the question, but it does ask for trust to sit alongside it when answers are not forthcoming. Many believers live for long seasons without a clear reason for hardship, learning instead to trust the character of God even when his methods remain hidden. Music that wrestles honestly with this tension, rather than offering easy resolution, tends to serve listeners better in the long run. It gives them permission to keep asking why while still choosing to keep believing, which is itself a mature and costly form of faith.

    Questions to sit with

    • What unanswered question have you had to learn to live with in faith?
    • How do you respond when God's reasons remain hidden from you?
    • What has helped you trust God even without full understanding?
