    Reflection

To be near you is one of the simplest and oldest desires in worship, echoed throughout the psalms where nearness to God is treated as the highest good, above safety, comfort or even answered prayer. Psalm 73:28 puts it directly, but for me it is good to be near God, I have made the Lord God my refuge, a statement made after the psalmist has wrestled honestly with envy and doubt earlier in the same poem. Nearness is not presented as automatic or easy, but as something chosen and treasured once discovered. This collaborative track, bringing together Elisabeth Harder and HXLY KXSS, sits within that tradition, less concerned with theological argument than with simple longing. There is something valuable in songs that keep desire this uncomplicated, resisting the urge to explain or justify wanting God, and simply asking to be close to him. Sometimes the plainest prayers carry the most weight.

    Questions to sit with

    • What does nearness to God actually look like in your daily life?
    • When have you chosen God's presence over other things you wanted?
    • How do you keep your desire for God from becoming complicated by other demands?
