Reflection
A commitment framed as lasting for all my life sets itself against a culture generally more comfortable with provisional commitments, ones that remain in place only as long as they continue to feel rewarding. Scripture holds up a different model, covenant rather than contract, faithfulness that is not contingent on circumstances remaining favourable. The marriage language scripture sometimes uses for God's relationship with his people carries exactly this weight, a bond intended to survive difficulty rather than dissolve at its first appearance. Sustaining a lifelong commitment, whether to God, to a marriage or to any other significant relationship, requires more than an initial feeling of devotion; it requires the deliberate, repeated choice to remain faithful on the many ordinary days when feeling has nothing particular to offer. Songs that declare devotion in these lasting terms are making a claim that is countercultural precisely because it refuses the exit clauses most modern commitments quietly assume are available.
