Reflection
A title like 'Never Mine' suggests a posture of surrender, an acknowledgement that whatever gifts, achievements or blessings a person holds were never truly their own possession to begin with. This is a deeply biblical idea. James 1:17 describes every good and perfect gift as coming down from the Father, and Job, having lost everything, still declared 'the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away' (Job 1:21). Holding life loosely, recognising that time, talent, relationships and even breath itself are on loan from God, is a humbling but freeing perspective. It removes the pressure of ownership and control, replacing it with stewardship and gratitude. This does not mean life's gifts do not matter, but it reframes how tightly they are gripped. Songs built around this theme often invite listeners to release their grip, whether on plans, possessions or people, and trust the giver more than the gift itself.
