    Reflection

Paul's instruction in Romans to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice is a strange and demanding image, borrowing the language of an altar and applying it not to a single dramatic moment but to an ongoing, daily posture of surrender. A living sacrifice, unlike the animal offerings it echoes, has to keep choosing to stay on the altar, which makes it in some ways more difficult than a single decisive act. This kind of surrender rarely looks dramatic from the outside; it looks like faithfulness in unremarkable choices repeated over years, a life quietly reordered around obedience rather than self-interest. Music built around this verse is choosing one of the more costly images available in scripture rather than a comforting one, and that choice matters. It asks not for a moment of inspiration but for a whole life held loosely, offered continually, and renewed, as Paul goes on to say, by the transformation of the mind rather than conformity to prevailing patterns.

    Questions to sit with

    • What would it practically look like for you to be a 'living sacrifice' in an ordinary week?
    • Why might a daily, ongoing surrender be harder than a single dramatic decision?
    • How do you understand the connection Paul draws between sacrifice and the renewing of the mind?
