From "Paper Planes" to Jesus
M.I.A., the artist behind the worldwide hit "Paper Planes," has spoken openly about a life-changing encounter with Jesus.
Raised in a Hindu family, M.I.A. said that in 2017 she experienced a powerful vision of Jesus Christ. She described the experience as something that completely changed her understanding of the world and led her to embrace Christianity, later describing herself as a born-again Christian.
What makes the testimony particularly striking is that she said she had been comfortable with Hinduism and had previously viewed Christianity very negatively. Yet after the experience, she said:
"I'm coming back now saying Jesus is real."
She also acknowledged that openly identifying as Christian could alienate some of her fans, but said she wasn't willing to hide what she believed.
In April 2026, M.I.A. released M.I.7, her seventh studio album — a project deeply influenced by her Christian faith, prayer and the Book of Revelation. The album includes tracks such as "JESUS," "SACRED HEART," "CALLING" and "777." It even features the Sunday Service Choir.
Whatever you think of her music or her journey, this is a remarkable transformation to hear from someone who once came from a Hindu background and now openly creates music centred around Jesus.
Sometimes faith begins with a question.
Sometimes it begins with an encounter.
And sometimes the person you least expect ends up telling the world:
Jesus is real.
