Reflection
'It Is Well' is one of the most enduring phrases in Christian song, tracing back to Horatio Spafford's hymn written after devastating personal loss. To pair it here with the idea of 'life won't' suggests a wrestling: life will not always go as planned, will not always be kind, will not always make sense, and yet somehow peace can still be declared over it. That is not denial, it is defiant faith. The Apostle Paul wrote from prison that he had learned to be content whatever the circumstances (Philippians 4:11-12), a contentment rooted not in changed circumstances but in a settled trust in God's presence. Grief and hardship are real and should never be minimised, but they are not the final word for someone who believes God is near. Music that holds both truths together, the pain of life and the peace of faith, gives listeners permission to feel both without contradiction. Sometimes saying 'it is well' is less a statement of fact and more a choice being made in real time.
