Reflection
Holiness can sound like a demanding word, associated with rules and unreachable standards, yet in Scripture it is first and foremost a description of God's own character before it is ever a command to us. Isaiah's vision of the throne room, where seraphim cry 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts' (Isaiah 6:3), is a picture of overwhelming beauty and otherness rather than austerity. A song that simply declares this word is doing something ancient: joining a chorus of worship that has echoed for millennia, from angels to ordinary congregations. It also poses a quiet challenge, because encountering true holiness tends to expose our own compromises, as it did for Isaiah, who responded with 'Woe is me' before receiving grace. Worship that dwells on holiness is therefore not meant to leave people feeling merely impressed, but changed, aware both of how far short they fall and how completely they are still welcomed. That tension, reverence alongside relief, is at the heart of genuine worship.
