What this song is about
Josiah Queen has said that “Fishes and Loaves” was one of the first songs he wrote while still working as a church janitor, offered up as an act of faith in the same way the boy in the Gospel story gave Jesus his meagre lunch. “I was like, 'God, I only have these songs. And I'm getting married. I'm trusting that this is the time You told me to do this,'” he has recalled, adding that stepping forward in faith with those songs was what opened up the opportunities that followed.

Reflection
The feeding of the five thousand, where a boy's small offering of five loaves and two fish became more than enough for a vast crowd (John 6:9-13), remains one of the most loved miracle stories precisely because it starts with something so modest. It is not a story about abundance appearing from nowhere, but about a small, willingly given contribution being multiplied beyond what anyone could have predicted. A song drawing on this image speaks to anyone who feels their resources, time, talent, energy, are simply too little to matter. That feeling is common and often paralysing, quietly convincing people to withhold the little they have rather than risk it looking insufficient. The miracle suggests otherwise, that God is not primarily interested in the size of what is offered but in the willingness to offer it at all. Music built around fishes and loaves invites listeners to reconsider what they have dismissed as too small, and to offer it anyway, trusting it might go further than expected.

- Have you ever seen a small contribution multiply into something unexpectedly significant?
- What holds you back from offering what you have, even when it feels insufficient?
