    About Hulvey

Chris "Hulvey" Hulvey is an American rapper and singer from Brunswick, Georgia, signed to Lecrae's Reach Records. His 2021 debut album Christopher blended hip-hop and pop and charted on Billboard's Christian/Gospel and Rap albums lists.

    Faith journey and beliefs

Hulvey says he was saved at age four and grew up steeped in church life in Southeast Georgia. He describes a college-era turning point in which he felt God tell him to delete his secular music, drop out of school and pursue Christian hip-hop full time, later crediting mentor Doug Pierce with deepening his discipleship.

    What this song is about

'Altar' closes Hulvey's album CRY, themed around communion, reflection and yearning in his relationship with God; while specific commentary on this song's lyrics is limited, it fits his stated aim for listeners to see their tears as 'a powerful expression of their journey with God,' interpretable as a song of surrender and worship at 'the altar.'

    Reflection

An altar in scripture is a place of encounter and offering, from Abraham's altars marking significant moments of worship to the New Testament reframing of sacrifice, where Romans 12:1 calls believers to offer themselves as 'a living sacrifice', an altar not made of stone but of daily surrender. To bring something to the altar is to relinquish control over it, whether that is a habit, a relationship, an ambition or a fear, placing it deliberately before God rather than clutching it privately. Hulvey and Forrest Frank, both known for candid, faith-forward hip-hop, exploring this theme suggests a personal reckoning, naming something specific enough to lay down rather than vague spiritual language. Altars in scripture were also often memorials, physical reminders of a moment when God met someone in a particular place. A song about an altar may be less about a single dramatic sacrifice and more about the ongoing practice of returning, again and again, to lay things down.

    Questions to sit with

    • What would it look like for you to bring something specific to the altar this week?
    • How do you practise ongoing surrender rather than a one-time decision?
    • What memorial moments with God do you look back on for encouragement?
