    Reflection

The phrase yesterday, today and tomorrow deliberately echoes Hebrews' description of Jesus Christ as the same yesterday, today and forever, a claim about consistency that matters enormously in a world where almost everything else, circumstances, relationships, our own moods, is constantly shifting. There is real comfort in a constancy that does not depend on our performance or our present feelings to remain true. Much of the anxiety people carry comes from uncertainty about the future or regret about the past, both of which are addressed, at least in part, by trusting a God who is not confined to any single moment the way we are. Music that leans on this particular verse is drawing on one of scripture's most reassuring claims about divine character, less about what God does in any given circumstance and more about who God simply is, unchangingly, across every one of them, regardless of what has happened before or what still lies ahead.

    Questions to sit with

    • What in your life currently feels most uncertain, past, present or future?
    • How does the idea of an unchanging God affect the way you sit with that uncertainty?
    • What would it mean practically to trust God's consistency rather than your own shifting feelings?
