    Reflection

Admitting simply I don't know is a rarer and more honest posture than religious culture sometimes allows for, since faith is often presented as requiring confident answers to every question. Scripture, though, makes room for genuine uncertainty; Job ultimately receives not an explanation for his suffering but an encounter with God's vastness that leaves many of his questions technically unanswered, and yet somehow that is enough. There is a difference between doubt that walks away and doubt that keeps asking honest questions while remaining in relationship, the second kind being far more common in scripture than confident certainty ever is. A title as blunt as this one gives permission to sit in that uncertainty rather than performing a resolution that has not actually arrived. Faith, understood this way, is less a finished position and more an ongoing conversation, one that can include real unanswered questions without collapsing, provided the conversation itself is never actually abandoned.

    Questions to sit with

    • Is there a spiritual question you genuinely do not have an answer to right now?
    • How does Job's story of unanswered questions but renewed relationship with God speak to your own doubts?
    • What is the difference between doubt that walks away and doubt that stays in the conversation?
