What Does "Holy" Really Mean? Understanding the Hebrew Word Qadosh

When we hear the word holy, many of us imagine perfection, strict rules, or someone who never makes mistakes. But that's not what the Bible is primarily talking about.

The Hebrew word translated as holy is qadosh (קָדוֹשׁ), and at its core, it means "to be set apart," "separate," or "distinct."

It's less about being flawless and more about belonging to God.

Set Apart for a Purpose

Throughout Scripture, God describes Himself as holy because there is no one like Him.

"Be holy, because I am holy." – 1 Peter 1:16

God also calls His people to be holy, not because they have earned it, but because they have been chosen and set apart for His purposes.

Think of something reserved for a special occasion. It has a unique purpose. In the same way, followers of Christ are called to live differently, not to blend into the world, but to reflect God's love, truth, and character.

Holiness Isn't About Perfection

One of the biggest misconceptions about Christianity is that God only accepts perfect people.

The truth is, none of us are perfect.

Every one of us falls short. We all "miss the mark." Yet through Jesus, we are invited into a relationship with God and called to become more like Him each day.

Holiness isn't pretending you've got everything together.

It's allowing God to shape your heart and choosing Him again and again, even when you fail.

Living Set Apart

Being set apart doesn't mean isolating yourself from the world.

It means living differently within it.

It looks like choosing forgiveness when bitterness feels easier.

Showing kindness when no one is watching.

Speaking truth with love.

Serving others without expecting anything in return.

Living with hope when circumstances are difficult.

Our lives become a reflection of Christ, not because we're trying to impress people, but because we're becoming more like Him.

What Does This Mean for Us Today?

Being holy doesn't mean having a perfect past.

It doesn't mean never struggling.

It doesn't mean acting superior.

It means recognising that your identity is found in Christ.

You have been called, loved, forgiven, and set apart for a purpose greater than yourself.

Every ordinary day becomes an opportunity to reflect God's extraordinary love.

The next time you read the word holy, remember the Hebrew word qadosh.

It reminds us that God isn't asking for perfection.

He's inviting us into a life that is different, a life set apart for Him.
