Was Jesus a clever cult leader?

The suggestion that Jesus was simply a clever cult leader who manipulated followers into devotion is one of several categories sceptics have proposed to explain his impact without accepting his claims about himself. It is a fair theory to weigh, but it runs into real historical difficulties, since most cult leaders build movements around themselves during their lifetime, and their movements typically collapse once the leader is discredited, imprisoned or killed. Jesus's movement did the opposite, exploding in growth after his death, driven by followers who insisted they had encountered him alive again, several of whom died rather than recant that specific claim. Manipulation rarely produces that kind of costly, sustained conviction among people who had every reason to walk away in disappointment (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). None of this proves the resurrection by itself, but it does mean the cult leader explanation has real historical weight to answer, not just a label to apply.
